Halloween is a festival celebrated on the 31st of October.It is mostly celebrated in the U.S.A, Puerto Rico, Ireland, UK and Canada.All the children dress-up in costumes and they go from door to door collecting sweets or money.

The word Halloween is shortened from All-Hallow-Even which was evening before ”All-Hallows-Day”( considered as Day of the Dead).Day of the Dead is when all the spirits rise from the dead. They are attracted to food left over on the doorsteps to scare off evil spirits.

The main themes on this day are usually linked with death, magic, mythical creatures eg. witches, bats,vampires,skeletons,black cats,broken mirrors,zombies and demons.

The Traditional colours are Black and Orange.Other Colours such as: red,green and purple are used as decoration for the house!

Pumpkins, scarecrows and carved jock-o laterns are symbols for halloween. 

Many games are played on this day such as: bobbing for apples and trying to eat treacle. Other games played by adolescents include:throwing eggs at neighbouring hosues, covering trees & lawns with toilet paper and stealing amts from the front doors.

On this day many scary stories are told!

The night  was also thought as the most favourable time for divinations concerning marriage, luck, health and death.

Another name for Halloween is All saints Day which is devoted to pranks played by young people.

There is another name for Halloween, it’s ”Pooky night” (some parts if Ireland)which was named after puca the mischievious spirit.

Many European cultural traditions hold that Halloween is one of the liminal times of the year when the spirit world can make contact with the natural world and when magic  is potent(powerful).

The olympic Games originally started in Greece on Mt Olympus to honour the supreme god (Zeus) who was the ruler of the sky.This event is held every four years(*four year period is called ”olympiad”) in many different cities for each year.Many people attend this special event to encourage their competitors and cheer on for their country.

On this event there are many activities such as: Aquatics, Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Boxing, Kayak, Cycling, Equestrian, Fencing, Football, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Rowing , Sailing, Shooting, Table Tennis, Tennis, Taekwondoe, Triathlon, Weightlifting,Wrestling and many more. 

In the ancient olympic games you hardly wore any clothes and if you did win a race you would recieve this olive branch. The olive branch is a symbol of peace and harmony.

 Women in ancient olympic games were not allowed to attend Olympic games because it was dedicated to zeus(only men could go) but there was another event for young,unmarried women called heraea which was named in honour of hera, the queen of the gods.

The two main symbols you see on that day is the olympic flag and the olympic torch.

Olympic flag: It consists of five rings.The rings represent the union of the five continents and the meeting of all atheletes from all nations at Olympic Games.

Olympic Torch:This torch is held by an athelete who runs from the stadium along the streets of the city and arriving back again at the stadium.

The olympic motto:It consists of three latin words “citius” ”altius” ”fortius” which means faster, higher and  stronger.

Another symbol you would see at the olympic games are mascots! In the year 2000 olympics which was held in sydney we had three mascots called: olly, Syd and millie.

my opinion:This event is really fun especially watching the competitors from your country competing!It’s also really special since it only occurs every four years.If you ever get a chance you should go visit the country at that time eg. 2008 olympics in Beijing you can visit and see what it’s actually like to be at the stadium etc.I hope you have learnt a bit more on the olympic games!

~Chapter 1~ (Me)

Hey! My  name is Diana.I was born in Auburn Hospital.In the year of the monkey.My birthday is on the 8th of december(1992). 

I have long black hair, brown eyes.

I’m a very kind person.Other people see me as a friendly person to talk to and to play with.

I can remember pulling my brother in a little trailer.Feeding him milk (from a bottle).Holding my brother in my arms (after he was born).I was a very happy child.

The first school i attended was called St Joachim’s.I went there when i was in kindergarten to year 3.In year 4 i went to North Rocks primary school.In year 5 & 6 i went to Murray Farm public school.Last year was my first year of High school (year 7) i went to Carlingford High.This year(year eight)- {8red} I’m still in Carlo high and i have many nice teachers.

~Chapter 2~ (MY FAMILY)

My family consists of my mother,father,my little brother and me.

My mum’s side of the family: Unfortunately my mum’s dad’s ( my grandfather)parents passed away when he was really young.My grandmother’s mum is still alive and she had 13 children! which consists of my grandmother from my mum’s side.My mum’s family consists of her parents,older sister, younger brother,younger sister and her.My grandfather likes:birds that can sing, fish, likes playing chinese chess, reading the newspaper in the mornings and watching the news in the afternoons. My grandmother likes: singing, dancing and exercising.

My dad’s side of the family:My dad’s parents are loving and kind.They are always working really hard.My grandfather likes: basketball,reading the news,  swimming and playing around.My grandmother likes:knitting, watching t.v, talking to her friends.They have chickens and ducks in their shed.My grandparents treats my mother and father nicely.

~Chapter 3~(My house)

My bedroom is big and it has creamy white walls.I’ve a window looking at the neighbours garden.

The favourtie objects i like in  my bedroom are my drawer where i put my special things inside, my bed,clothes, the television etc.

My street is very peaceful.Sometimes dogs bark and stray dogs may come to our house.During the night you might be able to see possums walking on the electric wires.If you are lucky you might be able to see an owl or two.

I have three goldfish in a large tank  but the pet i most desire is a puppy.

 ~Chapter 4~(My likes and Dislikes)

My favourite book so far is: Ella Enchanted and some others.I like hanging out with my friends,collecting nice stuff,animals,stationery,sport,reading interesting books,my birthday and many other special days of the year.I really love drawing! Once (when i was little) I  drew all over the furniture and the walls.My mum had to sell the furniture.

 My dislikes are: bugs , creepy crawlies, people tricking me (it’s funny though - at times),when people are left alone , people get bullied, war ,getting a bad mark in tests( try harder next time! =)  etc.

~Chapter 5~(My school)

My school is Carlingford High. It’s a co-ed school.There are many classes. The school has  five blocks: A,B,C,D and E.The school also has a school hall which is really big and many wonderful performances are performed every year.

We have five periods a day. The subjects we do are:English, Maths, Science, PDHPE,D&T, Art, Geography, History and music.

Matinee & Art ExhibitionComments Off

On wednesday the 26th of July,years seven, eight and nines were invited to watch an amusing concert during (periods three and four) performed by senior dance and drama groups.

As every student entered the hall;there were gasps and shouts of delight as students spotted their own artworks displayed against the walls of the hall.Also for the nice scenery and decorations around the hall.

The performances began with two girls actin out a play called ”Bats make me Crazy.”I thought the play was ok but i really liked the part where the little girl picked up the doll and lifted up the arm back and forwards.Then the actual person had to imitate what she did.I thought that was very creative.

Afterwards there were many dance performances such as: ”the wild”,”jump over the moon” and many other brilliant performances achieved by many of carlingford High School students.It was absolutely amazing! Although i didn’t get some of the performances….

As the concert was beginning to end many students rushed eagerly towards the art exhibition to take a good look at the many items bering displayed.

When i was gazing at the artworks i found out that there were at least three masterpieces done by me! i was very proud of myself! I also discovered that some of the artworks were my friends and they were in my class last year!

In my opinion: I thought the performances were pretty good.The performances were very entertaining.It was a great experience to see people from our school performing ”live” in our school hall!It was great  to see friends and people you know dancing under those costumes.The performance must have taken a lot of hard work and time from those staff members involved!All i can say is that it was an aboslutely fantastic day!

In the early morning light on the 19th of july you could see many students and guests dressed in the colours of the rainbow heading towards Carlingford High School. 

Today was no ordinary day at Carlingford High School.Today is the day when Carlingford High School celebrated its cultural diversity(International Day).The actual meaning of this day is:when different people who are from different countries come together!

There were many people who didn’t come to our school who even attended this day at this school. Also some students from Roslea public school came to attend this spectacular day.

At the beginning of the day students had roll call then they had two normal lessons.Afterwards we had recess and then all students had to gather at the quad for a assembly.

Once the assembly finished most of us had to go to the concert in the hall.There were many brilliant performances such as:Lion dancing, Jazz groups,cheer Leading, japanese play,Tablar players, Korean& Taiwanese Love/Pop songs,Chiense Opera,Korean flute,German slapdancers and last but not least Indian fashion paradeswhich 3 teachers and students attended(All wearing dazzling and stunning clothing).

Soon the concert ended and there was a light drizzle outside.This drizzle didn’t stop those students to get to the food.There were many different stalls with food.

Now, all you could see was students purchasing yummy food from different cultures and many games such as: pie eating contest, face painting, basketball shoot-outs, a french game(Petanque), mini soccer world cup, Karaoke singing and video games.There was even a stall with hand-made jewellery by some junior girls.

Some teachers said,”this school is turning into an american school(in a joking way) and that this day was going to be really good especially for those new students and those who haven’t attended an international day while they’ve been at carlo high.”

Many other students said,” this school was like absolutely normal in the morning now it has turned into a fabulous fete,I hope we get to have another one next year!”

My Opinion:I thought this day was pretty good but there weren’t many activities to do!The performances were brilliant!I hope we can have one next year too although it will take a lot of  hard work and enthusiasm!I hope everyone else enjoyed this day too.

Running Time:Approx.2 hrs and 30 mins

The most recent movie i’ve seen is Harry Potter and the goblet of fire which is the fourth movie of the ”Harry Potter” series.The main characters Harry potter, Hermione and Ron are in their fourth year at Hogwarts.

Shortly before starting their fourth year at Hogwarts, Harry, Hermione and Ron attend the Quidditch World Cup.However, the festivties are soon broken up by the Death Eaters who are groups of witches and wizards loyal to their evil master (Lord Voldemort) or the one who should not be named.

They frightened all the people by conjuring a dark mark in the sky which siganls that the dark lord would return.This event has been already been foretold in Harry’s recent nightmares.

Upon returning to Hogwarts, the students were told that there won’t be a Quidditch World Cup Competition. Instead there will be an event which hasn’t taken place in Hogwarts for over one hundred years. This event is the  Triwizard tournament.

This tournament is a wizard competition between Hogwarts and two other european wizard schools.The two school that are participating with hogwarts are: Drumstrang Institute and BeauxBatons Academy.

One champion will be selected from these schools to compete in a series of life-threatening tasks so that you could win the cup.

To chose a contestant students have to put names in an enchanted goblet of fire which is surrounded by a ring.Only people who are over seventeen are allowed to attend this competition.

After a week or so the Ministry of Magic official (Barty Crouch) and Dumbledore organise a candlelit ceremony as the enchanted goblet of fire selects one student from each school to compete.

Among a hail of sparks and flames, the cup names one of the students from Quidditch Inistitute.It was the Quidditch superstar Victor Krum.Then it was followed by another burst of flames and a piece of paper flew out which said Fleur Delacour from Beuxbratons Academy.Finally last but not least  the goblet spurted out another name.It was Cedric Diggory from Hogwarts.

Suddenly another burst of sparks and flames came from the goblet .Another name came out.It was Harry Potter! Then everyone started murmuring and mumbling that he was underage and he can’t attend etc.

Dumbledore suspected that whoever  put Harry’s name in the goblet wanted to put him in grave danger.So Dumbledore asked mad eye moody(new defence against the arts teacher)to keep his magical eye on the teenage wizard.

Events take an menacing turn when someone is murdered in Hogwarts grounds.As they edge closer to  the Triwizard Cup, Harry soon finds himself hurtling towards an encounter with true evil…..

My Opinion of this movie:I thought this movie was pretty good and it would keep you sitting in your seat throughout the whole movie but it was scary when there was skeletons and bones and Lord voldemort appeared!I would rate this movie 8/10 because they could have put more scenes from the book and could’ve made it more interesting!It has some humour,ballroom dancing ,contained magical creatures like:dragons and dangerous mermaids and a bit of romance.

Today when mrs raynor told us we had to do speeches i was shocked.My heart sank to the bottom.I loathe and despise speeches! I hate doing speeches in front of a lot of people because i might do a mistake or say somehting wrong etc.

Mrs Raynor also told us that she would make it fair by putting our names in a  container and pulling them out.I hope i wasn’t first or last! As soon as i got home i thought real hard for a topic.There were many topics in the world such as: animals, friends, mythological creatures, are books things of the past? and sport etc.

Soon i came up with a strange topic. The topic was ”The History of Ice-cream.”Afterwards i did a lot of research and went to many different sites.Then i put it together and BINGO there’s my speech! Here it is:

Good morning/afternoon mrs raynor and fellow classmates.
Today I’ll be talking about the very, Very confusing History of Ice-cream. Everybody knows what ice-cream is made of but do they know the history of ice-cream?
It was believed that the ice cream was discovered approximately in the 1600s. Theres a lot of argument about who invented ice-cream.
The Greeks and Macedonians say they  invented ice-cream because Alexandra the great who was one of the greatest military generals brought the technique of using ‘’cold pits’’ from his home in Macedonia, to Patna in India.
Cold Pits are holes filled with snow and covered with thick oak planks. When Alexandra and his army were surrounding Patna, Alexandra had 30 giant cold pits dug so the army could sit out in the surroundings of a fortified place to cut off supplies and compel its surrender in comfort with iced wine. There was a record of Alexandra telling his slaves to bring down ice from the mountains and he also told them to dig 30 trenches so that he and his army can have cool refreshments. He really enjoyed iced beverages.
The Indians say they already  knew about cold pits long before Alexander invaded and that they invented ice-cream. The ancient Indian dish ‘’kulfi’’ is made from milk that is boiled till it thickens then it’s frozen in cold pits.
The Arabs and Turks say they  were the first to have iced fruit drinks. Their fruit drinks were frozen in stored ice or snow were soft and slushy, a bit like a pineapple crush. The drink was produced from the snow on mount Etna and mixed with fruit juice to make the first semi-solid iced drink.
The Chinese say they invented ice-cream because they had cold pits going back to 1100BC and the Chinese emperors drank dishes of sweetened milk thickened with ground rice and frozen in porcelain bowls. There has also been evidence that china made ice-cream with  milk and rice mixtures that was solidified by packing it into the snow.
The Italians say they  invented REAL ice-cream made with cream. The Italian cooks that travelled with Catherine and Marie d’Medici from Italy when they married into the French Royal family
said that  Catherine d’medici brought ice-cream recipes with them.
The French say no!no!no! They  already knew about ice-cream long  before the Italian chefs arrived, and that they  invented really creamy ice-cream thickened with eggs. Anyway they opened the first ice-cream shop in 1686: the café of Procopio dei Coltelli which sold water ices as well as ‘iced cheeses’’ which was thick ice cream like the ice-cream we know today. The Italians say hey wait a second, Procopio dei Coltellu was ITALIAN even if he did open the café in France.
The English say they may not have invented ice-cream but they invented the name ‘ice-cream.’’ The real inventor is lost in history since no one knows who REALLY invented ice-cream!

Luckily for me i wasn’t first or last! I was approximately in the middle( I was relieved). When i presented my speech i felt my heart beating against my rib cage because everyone was looking at me! My heart felt like it was going to pop out!

Finally when i finished i felt so good that i’ve finished!I was proud of myself!

~Monkeys using sentences~1

It’s believed that monkeys can say a ‘’simple sentence”  according to the research about the first evidence that animals may be capable of a key feature of language.

 In Nigeria  British scientsists who have been examining a group of putty-nosed monkeys have discovered that these monkeys communicate by combining sounds into a sequence that has a distinctive meaning from any of its component calls, an ability  that was thought to be uniquely human.

Although animals only communicate each other using calls which has a special meaning- mostly warning others that a predator is nearby- none has known to combine these alarm calls into an order simialr to the human language.

These discoveries suggest that the basics of the arrangement of words in the sentences and phrases of language , a basic component of the human language.It may be more widespread among these apes than we thought, and possibly ultimately spread the evolution of this most distinctly human feature.

These Putty-nosed monkeys(cercopithecus nictitans) in the  Gashaka Gumti National Park have two main alarm call sounds. A sound  known onomatopoeically(a word imitating a sound).A ”pyow”warns the others that a leopard is close by. When there is a sort of coughing sound that scientists say it sounds  like”hack” it warns the pthers that an eagles is hovering.

Kate Arnold and Klaus Zuberbuhler, of the University of St Andrews in Scotland, have now observed the monkeys using these sounds in a new way.

The monkeys live in groups that only consists of a male and several females and their young.When the male gives a call that sounds like this: ”pyow” ”pyow” ”pyow” then followed by ”hack” ”hack” ”hack” ”hack.” This command tells the others to move to a safer and less exposed terrain.

They don’t just use this call for predators but also for foraging. It seeems to mean ”let’s get out of here.”

Dr Arnold said:”These calls were not produced randomly and a number of distinct patterns emerged. One of these patterns was what we have termed a ‘pyow-hack sequence’. ”

This was either produced by only by itself or inserted at certain postions in the call series. The  suggestion is that primates, at least, may be able to ignore the usual relationship between an individual call and any meaning that it might convey under certain circumstances.”

 Dr Zuberbuhler added:”To our knowledge, this is the first good evidence of a  syntax-like natural communication system in a non-human species.”

My Opinion: This report is really interesting talking about how these monkeys form warning calls into a sequence.It would be more fascionating if you know what they are saying and you can have a conversation with them. I think the scientists should discover more about these creatures like how they started to speak it and how they can form those pronounciations etc.

~Killer Bunny~1

Once upon a time  in a village far far away(on the other side of the world)  there lived many bright and cheerful people.Everyday they would do their chores and have their fun/free time tomplay.

Today was just like any other day fine, sunny and brightbut it was even special because it was the day before EASTER!So some villagers decided to go berry picking in the near  by forest while the others prepared for a feast for lunch.

Suddenly a very old man walked up to them and asked if he could stay for the night.They all examined him he looked really tired so they reluctantly let him stay for the meantime.

As soon as the lunch bell rang everybody rushed to their arranged seatsbut they realised they had to get a spare chair for the guest.While some people went to get the chair the others questioned him about how he got here.

Once the people who went and got the chair for their guest they immediately sat down to enjoy their meal but was interuppted by a cough from their chief.

So they waited for him to invite the guest and ask about his journey.Once he sat down he started to tell them his story.Many of the little kids were sitting next to him said that the this story is going to be good.

Finally he began to talk of his long journey.Firstly he told them that he wasn’t a traveller instead he was a wizard. At first everyone just gaped but he they told him to continue.

Then he told them of all the scenery he has seen on his trips.Many like the golden shimmering sunset etc.Afterwards he had finished his story everyone was so busy chatting that they didn’t realise their food was getting cold.

Later on when they finished their food the little kids wanted the wizard to do tricks .Although he was very tired he still performed some tricks for the little kids because he loved children.

Soon it was bedtime for everybody.They all went to bed and set up a lovely bed for their guests.Everybody slept peacefully.The only things you could here were the snoring of the villagers.

Suddenly in the distance you could hear these foosteps getting louder and louder.It sounded like a GIANT!This certainly woke everybody up. Everyone was scared so they lay in their beds not moving a single limb and pretended to sleep.

The next day everyone had dark circles under their eyes since they hadn’t slept a wink! they were so frighten of that creature that was walking in the night.

That’s when someone called out Look theirs BIG footprints here.Let’s follow them and find out who didn’t let us sleep last night.Nobody was brave enough to go!

Everyone rushed to the guest room and asked if the wizard can help them get rid of that creature. He said i’m afraid not but i can help you all keep a lookout in the night for that creature.Then i can probably turn it into something sweeter or cuter perhaps.

In the night everyone did as they were told.Once again it was silent but then you could hear the footsteps again .Immediately they called for the wizard.

He rushed out to the scene.The creature had razor -sharp teeth,extremely pointy ears andred laser eyes.It looked exactly like a bunny but much nastier!

Soon everyone was gasping because that creature looked like it was about to eat their guest up ! The wizard was prepared he muttered something under his breath then -poof- the creature turned into a  BIG choclate bunny. That’s the end of the Killer Bunny.

But be careful he could be back!

~Ella Enchanted~2

The book i’ve recently read is called”Ella Enchanted.”It’s about this girl called ella.When Ella was born she was given an obedience curse by the imprudent fairy(Lucinda).The obedience curse means she has to do ANYTHING that ANYONE tells her to do but it has to be an order.

Ella realised that she was given the curse on her fifth birthday when mandy(Their cook) Baked a birthday cake for Ella and told her to eat so ella started eating soon she was bloated but she continued stuffing the cake into her mouth.Then her mother walked inside and realised that her daughter  was crying while she was eating so her mother told her to stop eating and ella stopped.

As Ella grew older she knew how to delay her obedience,but each moment cost her dearly- in breathlessness, nausea, dizziness, and other complaints.She couldn’t hold out for long.She started to struggle in a few minutes.

Her mother has asked her fairy godmother to take away the curse.But her fairy godmother said only Lucinda could remove the curse.However, she also said it might be broken someday without Lucinda’s help.But Ella didn’t know how. Ella didn’t know who her fairy godmother was.

When Ella was almost fifteen, her mother and herself caught a cold.Mandy dosed them with her curing soup, made with carrots, leeks, celery, and hair from a unicorn’s tail. It was delicious, but they both hated seeing the long yellow-white hairs floating around the vegetables.Ella sipped her soup with the hairs in it becausemandy had said to, even though i grimaced at the soup and at Mandy’s retreating back.

Then, after Mandy left, she took the hairs out while she ate and put them back in the empty bowl when she was done.The next day I was well but mother was much worse, too sick to drink or eat anything.To make her feel better ella put cold cloths on her forehead and told her stories.Before Mandy sent me off for the night, Mother kissed me.”Goodnight. I love you, precious.”They were her last words to ella….

 The next morning, she was awake, but dreaming.With wide-open eyes, she chatted to invisible courtiers.When mandy and I were in the room she was absolutely silent.

The next thing you know was that Ella’s mother had died and her father had come back from his trading expedition to attend the funeral.When they closed the lid of Ella’s mothers coffin Ella started to cry like a baby so her father told her to go away and then come back when she was quiet.

Ella ran to the biggest tree in the nearby graveyard.That tree happen to be an weeping tree.Ella plunged through the leaves and threw herself down, sobbing.

Then Ella realised that she wasn’t alone in the graveyard there was another person with her  ans he (Prince Charmont) was reading a tombstone.Ella started to worry because she thought he heard her crying.

Afterwards they started to have an conversation about Ells’s mother and herself but her father arrived to pick ella up.They arrived back in the manor.Ella’s Father (Sir Peter) had told Ella to change into another mourning gown so ella hurried upstairs into her bedroom where she changed into a green frock that her mother had liked her to wear because it brought out her eyes.

As soon as Ella arrived in the great hall most of the guests had arrived. Her father thought the frock was a disgrace because they were suppose to be in mourning.

Suddenly  a syrupy voice filled there conversation.The voice came from a tall, plump lady with long and wavy honey-coloured tresses.Her face  a pasty white with twin spots of rouge on her cheeks.With her were two smaller versions of herself, but without the rouge.Soon the lady left with Sir peter while her two daughters were left to comfort ella but all they talked about were topics to do with money etc.

Ella politely asked them if they would like to eat.They said they didn’t want to eat .Then they reconsidered and decided to eat some but they ate so much.

Soon all the guests had to leave and the servants had to clean the plates up.Ella helped Mandy do some chores .Then she asked Mandy who her fairy godmother was.Mandy replied……

My Opinion: ”Ella Enchanted” was a very creative book because it was like Cinderella but with a magiacal twist. I really enjoyed reading this book.
